The forewings are yellow-bronze in color, 6-8 mm in span, with silvery-white spots bordered with black. The species differ in the shape and location of these spots. The hindwings are ash-colored with long fringes exceeding the wing width. Eggs in both species are gelatinous, cellular, 0.28-0.32 mm in diameter. The top-sided moth places them on the upper side of the sheet, and the lower-sided one on the bottom. During hatching, caterpillars through the shell of the eggs immediately penetrate under the epidermis of the leaf, forming passages (mines), where their further development takes place. Their body is flattened, chest legs are absent. With age, it acquires a cylindrical shape and pectoral legs appear. Caterpillars of the last age secrete cobweb threads with which they pull the mine, giving it a folded shape.

Mass reproduction of crimped apple moth in Moldova has been canceled in the gardens of Transnistria. The butterfly of this species is very small - from 4.7 to 5.5 mm in wingspan. Her body has a color from dark coffee to black. The front wings are covered with black, shiny coffee shade, coarse scales. Almost in the middle of the front wings there is a transverse light stripe formed by silvery-white scales. The hind wings are gray-coffee in color, fringed with long shiny hairs. Caterpillar of intense yellow color with a wedge-shaped brown head, flat, legless. The body is 3.2 to 4 mm long, flattened. Pupa is light brown and located in a cocoon. Throughout its life, the caterpillar feeds on a mine located on the upper side of the leaf. At first, it looks like a thin narrow passage filled in the middle with caterpillar excrement. Soon, the mine becomes wider, and the line of excrement remains in the middle of it and shines through the shell in the form of a black line. Strokes are from 2.5 to 4.8 cm long. On the underside of the leaf at their location, spots of yellow-brown color are visible. During mass reproduction of this moth, the leaves are completely covered with mines (more than 50 minutes per leaf), turn brown and fall off. In this case, the caterpillar does not pass from one sheet to another.

The flight of the first (overwintered) generation is observed at the beginning of leaf opening at an average daily temperature of + 10 °. After a few days, the females lay eggs, which develop in 10-14 days. The hatched caterpillars of the first generation feed for 28-36 days and then pupate. The period of emergence of butterflies, the laying of eggs and the hatching of caterpillars from them are stretched, therefore, in nature, generations overlap one another. The flight of the second generation butterflies is recorded in mid-June. The development of their eggs is faster by 6-8 days. Caterpillars also grow faster - in 20-28 days. The flight of the third generation butterflies is observed at the end of July - August, and the development of their caterpillars - in August, September and even at the beginning of October. Wintering pupae already appear in September.

Most scientists believe that the main reason for the mass reproduction of mining moths is the use of DDT in gardens, which causes the death of their natural enemies (poachers and chalcid) without destroying the pest itself. In those orchards where DDT and sevin have been used in the fight against the codling moth for several years, the number of mining moths is increasing. Consequently, in the breeding centers, it is necessary to replace these drugs, for example, with chlorophos, which, with its timely and correct use, frees trees from mining moths, fruits from the codling moth, and for entomophages it is not so much harmful as DDT and sevin. Spraying with chlorophos against the moth excludes special sprays against moths. However, it should be borne in mind that chlorophos gives a positive result only in the fight against young caterpillars, which are in the superficial epidermal mine.
