CicutaTsikuta, or poisonous milestone, is a plant famous for the fact that Socrates was poisoned with it by the verdict of the court. Nowadays people do not poison hemlock - for the most part they do not know what it looks like.

And yet, we need to know the plant (in another way it is called angelica, cat parsley, pork louse, vyakha, omega, water rabies, water hemlock, mutton, gorigolova, omezhnik).

Firstly, because cicuta is widespread throughout Russia. Secondly, cases of poisoning of animals with hemlock are not uncommon. Most of the poisoning occurs in early spring and autumn due to the lack of other green vegetation. Mass poisoning was noted, especially in those cases when a hungry herd was released into meadows overgrown with a poisonous milestone due to an insufficient supply of forage on farms or after a long haul or transportation.

CicutaA case near Perm is described, when over 400 heads of cattle were killed in one of the herds in three days. In the middle of the past, a herd of pigs died after a day of grazing on a swampy river bank. Signs of poisoning: severe convulsions, rapidity of death.

Near Kaluga at the end of the century before last, massive diseases of cattle with signs of acute gastroenteritis were noted. "Diseases" appeared in May-June and were epizootic in nature; the number of those poisoned was in the hundreds. In those days, Kaluga pastures were distinguished by a space limited for livestock with very moist soil, an abundance of swampy areas with poor grass stand, saturated with a milestone.

The most unpleasant thing for rural contractors, who receive most of the inconvenience from collective farms, was that drying the grass did not eliminate the toxicity of the milestone. Rhizomes turned out to be deadly poisonous for all farm animals.

CicutaLethal doses for cattle are 200-250 grams of fresh rhizomes, for sheep 60-80 is enough. And do not believe those who claim that the rhizomes of the milestone are supposedly not poisonous to sheep.

The clinical picture of poisoning is as follows. The first signs: anxiety, salivation, bloating, trembling, increased excitability, frequent urine and feces. A particularly characteristic picture is the onset of seizures: at first, a small twitching of the muscles of the head, soon spreading throughout the body. During an attack, the animal falls, its head tilts back convulsively, its legs are stretched tensely. The spasm turns into a disorderly movement of the legs, neck, jaws. Animals hit the ground with their heads, foam accumulates at the corners of the mouth. The attacks follow one after another. Respiration is rapid and convulsive. Death occurs within a few hours. With mild poisoning, the animal can survive.

Cicuta is a perennial or biennial plant of the umbrella family. The stem is hollow, branched, up to a meter high. Leaves are doubly-triple-pinnate-dissected into narrow-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate lobes. The flowers are white, small, gathered at the ends of the branches in complex umbrellas. The fruit is a double rounded achene. The rhizome is thick, often short, inside it is divided by transverse partitions (they can be clearly seen if the rhizome is cut lengthwise). The whole plant, especially the rhizome, smells like parsley. The milestone grows along the banks of ponds, lakes, in swamps, in swampy, shady places, sometimes in large thickets.

CicutaThe main toxic start milestone is cicutotoxin. Its content in the fresh rhizome is 0.2%, in the dried one - from 1.5 to 3.5%. In acute poisoning, treatment is useless. However, it is still recommended to give the poisoned animal charcoal, tannin or a hydrochloride that weakens convulsions, people, in addition to the specified, - milk (2-3 liters per dose) and eggs.
