Choosing a water heater

Choosing a water heaterThe fastest and easiest way to provide a private house is to install an electric storage water heater in it. For its installation, you will not need to invite welders or order an expensive project. You can even completely independently install this type of unit with some experience and knowledge. One has only to take into account that the water heater will need a separate wiring line from the shield, since this is a fairly powerful device.

The next option is to install an electric instantaneous water heater. Here, however, the matter will not end with the laying of only separate wiring for him, since the flow heaters exceed the storage heaters in power. Most likely, water machines will have to be replaced with more modern and powerful ones, preferably even immediately with an RCD.

When choosing a model of an electric heater, immediately tune in not to really believe the sellers, who claim that 5 kW of power will be enough for you even on frosty days. At minus twenty degrees outside, the temperature of the supplied water can drop to 5-10 degrees, so you will have to limit yourself to using water only to wash the dishes or get used to the Spartan conditions and winter swimming. In the cold Russian winter, you can only count on the warmth of a shower if you purchase an instantaneous water heater with a capacity of at least 15 kW. And if you want not only a warm shower, but also water really heated to boiling water, especially in several points of the house, then only models with a power of 19-24 kW are suitable. Hot water is fine, but be prepared for high energy bills and use them.

The disadvantages of electric water heaters are obvious - their operation will not only make you reconsider the reliability of your wiring, but will also significantly increase utility costs. Gas models are a much cheaper option. This is a more preferable option if the house is connected to a gas main or it is possible to regularly purchase liquefied gas. But there is one nuance - the installation of a gas heater itself will cost more than an electric one, since you will not only have to pay for the work of specialists to connect it to a gas pipe and check ventilation and chimneys, but you will also have to order a separate project and obtain permits from the fire inspection. It is also possible that existing ones will have to be replaced or additional chimneys and ventilation pipes installed. In general, this whole process may take more than one month and require tens of thousands of costs. However, further economical operation of a gas water heater will justify them, so it's worth it.

Choosing a water heaterIf you compare a gas storage and flow heater (gas water heater) with each other, then it is difficult to give any recommendations, it all depends only on your preferences. The lack of accumulative electric models for gas no longer works - on such a cheap fuel as gas, the boiler can work without a significant load on the family budget at least around the clock. It is more likely to proceed from questions of economy during installation - it is better to choose models with a smoke hole suitable for your chimneys, this may help to avoid replacing them.

And what if there are no chimneys at all or no free ones and there is no great desire to install additional ones? Then you should pay attention to gas columns with closed combustion chambers. The removal of products and air injection in such units is hardware-based, which makes them more expensive compared to conventional models. Columns of this type have a coaxial chimney that goes out through a small hole in the wall.

In addition, in addition to devices working directly from energy carriers, it is possible to pick up units that indirectly heat water using the heat of the heating systems to which they are connected. A coil is installed in the tank of such heaters, which is heated by a circulating energy carrier. The only thing is that you definitely cannot get boiling water in this way, since the coolant will not be able to heat the water even to its own temperature, it will be lower anyway.

Solid fuel water heaters, or, as they are also called, titans, have also been known since Soviet times. For decades, they have not undergone major changes in their design, however, the efficiency has increased somewhat. It is rather uncomfortable to obtain hot water supply with the help of them, therefore, it is worth postponing the consideration of buying a solid fuel device for the most extreme case, when the other options cannot be implemented.

Accumulative and instantaneous water heaters. Advantages and disadvantages

Household heaters can be storage or flow-through. The first ones are rather large in size, since they, as reflected in the name of their type, accumulate water using large enough tanks for this. In essence, storage devices are an ordinary boiler that constantly maintains a certain water temperature.

Choosing a water heaterIn addition to their large size and weight, the disadvantages of storage heaters can also be attributed to their high energy consumption, since they do not stop working even at a time when there is no need for it, for example, at night. It is not an option here to periodically turn off the device, since it may take about two hours to heat the water again. Another disadvantage is that the water in them can run out at the most unexpected moment. However, it still has some advantages - such devices store a fairly substantial supply of hot water and when, for example, the electricity is turned off, it will be warm in them for some time, while a flow-through electric heater will not be able to give a drop.

Flow-through heaters operate on a different principle, in which the tank replaces a radiator that heats the water that passes through it. Moreover, such devices do it quite effectively - in less than a minute, they can heat even the coldest water to a state of boiling. They create no water supply, since the heat would still quickly go away due to the lack of thermal insulation, and the volumes of the radiators are quite modest.

Water heaters durable type are lightweight and compact, which greatly simplifies their installation and transportation, and it is easier to find a place in the apartment for their installation. The advantages of this type of device include an unlimited amount of water (in the presence of an energy source) and a short waiting time for its heating. After opening the tap, the flow heater will start automatically, and after half a minute you can go to the shower and stay there as long as you need. In large houses, flow-through heaters are often connected to several water intake points at once, for example, a kitchen faucet and a shower. Instantaneous gas-fired water heaters or so-called columns are equipped with a modulating burner, in which the flame height changes depending on the flow rate. This allows you to obtain a stable water temperature regardless of how intensively the water is used.

But it would be dishonest not to point out some of the shortcomings of flowing miracle devices. To begin with, the temperature of the water received at the outlet of such a unit is not constant and depends on the temperature of the incoming water, the intensity of its flow and the power of the device. Therefore, it is periodically required to adjust the device and complicates the temperature setting during use. Low-power devices often simply cannot cope with heating water in the cold season. You can reduce the flow and thereby slightly raise the temperature, but such a rise is limited by the settings of the water heaters themselves - at a certain moment, the water flow rate will cross the lower bar and the heater will simply turn off. Please note that when choosing an instantaneous heater, special attention should be paid to their performance and power. Comfortable water procedures at any time of the year will allow models with indicators of at least 8 l / min and 15 kW. These indicators are equally true both for gas water heaters and for electric instantaneous water heaters.
