Challah festive on Rosh Hashanah

Ingredients

yeast 2 tsp
flour 500 g
sugar 3 tbsp. l.
salt 1 tsp
egg 3 pcs
vegetable oil 3 tbsp. l.
raisins 1/2 cup
water 200-230 ml
Challah yolk

Cooking method

  • Place all the ingredients in a bucket of HP and knead the dough using the "Dough with raisins" program or, if not in a dispenser, then add raisins at the end of the second batch. When the dough is ready, cut the dough in half and heat sausages from each half with your hands, one end of which is thicker than the other, 50-60 cm long, roll each sausage in a spiral so that the thick end lies in the center, and put the challah on a greased baking sheet. Brush with yolk, knocked down with two tablespoons of water, and leave for 25 minutes in a warm place to rise. Bake the challah in a preheated oven over medium heat (180 °) for 40-50 minutes.

Note

"And the Lord said to Moses, saying: declare to the children of Israel and say to them: when you enter the land into which I am leading you, and you eat the bread of that land, then offer an offering to the Lord; from the firstfruits of your dough you must offer up a cake (challah) as an offering. ; exalt it as an offering from the threshing floor; from the firstfruits of your dough give as an offering to the Lord for all generations. "
(Num. 15: 17-21)

"God, what an ill-mannered man this Lubavitcher Rebbe is! [41] He tears challah with his hand!" - exclaimed one familiar lady, seeing on the videotape a festive feast in the house of the deceased rabbi (may the memory of the righteous be blessed!). All attempts to explain to the lady that the rabbi has two prestigious universities behind him, that we are talking about one of the most educated and cultured people of the last century, came across her incredulous, ironic look. She so, alas, could not understand how to tear challah with her hands in order to distribute it to others. And the Hasidim surrounding the rebbe themselves, from her point of view, behaved more than strange - each of them tried to get ahead of the other, as if fearing that he would not get a piece from the rebbe's hands.
You need to know and love the Hasidic tradition in order to understand the meaning of what is happening at the Hasidic table. And even more so - at the rabbi's table!
There is something fascinating and warm in this division of challah by hand, reminiscent of brotherhood among all Jews. Well, if the challah is divided by a large rabbi and a tzaddik, then getting a piece of challah from his hands is a great honor and great luck. In general, this or that food from the rabbi's table, handed over to him personally or specially sent by him to one of his Hasidim, is believed to have miraculous properties. For some, this food can bring long-awaited good luck, for some, it can help get rid of troubles and illnesses, and for others, it can simply ease the last suffering in the event of a fatal illness. I heard many stories about such gifts from the Rebbe in my time in Bnei Brak ...
And the order of challah division is also very important. In any Jewish home, regardless of whether it is Hasidic or "Lithuanian", after the blessing, the owner eats the challah himself, and then gives it to his wife - the person closest to him. This rule is violated only if the mother or father of the owner of the house is at the table - then the second piece is due to the father, the third to the mother, the fourth to the wife, well, and then the challah is distributed according to the principle of seniority among family members ...
