The best way to freeze mint (+ video)

Ingredients

Peppermint
Container
Cling film
Container with water

Cooking method

Having tried many options for freezing mint, I came up with this method. It is convenient because the mint will always remain intact, will not crumble and break. It takes up little space, in contrast to freezing in ice cubes.

So, take a plastic container and cut the mint cuttings to a size equal to the length of the container. Dip the twig in water (this way the mint is better preserved) and wrap it tightly (!!!) in cling film. Cut off the excess edges of the film. You can wrap several branches at once. The process only at first glance seems to be long, but in some 15 minutes I wound a whole bunch of such tubes)) And due to the fact that the rolls are rolled tightly and stored in a container, after defrosting, mint pleases with its beautiful leaves (in the video I show what the mint looks like after thawing).

Unfortunately, after defrosting, mint absolutely loses its taste and smell, for which we love it. Stopped freezing. I use only dried, here the taste and aroma of mint is preserved

I cannot agree ((Of course, neither dried nor frozen can be compared with fresh ones. In dried mint, over time, essential oils evaporate, even if the jar is tightly closed (after all, we open the jar from time to time, and sometimes every day).) But to freeze mint is needed as soon as possible after cutting, then everything will be ok with the aroma))

Maybe wrapping with cling film for freezing is the best alternative to vacuum bags? Do odors penetrate through it during storage? Is the content drying out?

You know, I did not use vacuum bags. I used to use regular ones with a zip fastener. I did not like it very much, because all the contents were crumpled and crumbled. Odors do not penetrate, because in addition to the film, the container also protects it. And it seems to me that the very thin crust of ice that forms after dipping in water does not allow it to dry out. Something like this ))

Please tell me, did you unpack your freshly frozen bag? I'm wondering if you defrost mint for a long time (a couple of months), will it look the same ?? We freeze it for the winter)) which means she’ll definitely lie in the freezer for several months) I’m just making a comparison with strawberries, for example .. frozen strawberries almost do not lose their shape or structure within a couple of days after defrosting - and if they lie for a couple of months, then after after defrosting, it becomes all soft and does not hold its original form anymore.

Hello! The lying one will look exactly the same (unfortunately, I cannot show last year's one, it is no longer there). It is for greater safety that I dip it in water. If you watched the video, then the leaves, of course, are no longer the same as those of fresh mint, they are limp, but green and beautiful in the water. Nothing else will happen to her.

I can't agree

And I do not insist And each of us will be right, and preserve mint to your taste

But you can try. Why not?
I've always dried. Then I keep it in a glass jar under the lid. And I'll try to freeze it. In winter everything is better than nothing, right?)))

By the way, I also just dried before. And then somehow I liked freezing even more. Although I have an electric dryer, and I have dried out on it, probably, everything that can be dried, even cucumbers

I mint and freeze and dry. In the freeze, it is lying around for 4 years, when completely with crumpled seams, then it goes. for lack of a cook .. have a janitor... But dried, simply cut to its full height and tied with an armful of rope like a broom and hung to dry, for lack of time. Then folded with the same brooms in a box - only fresh mint tastes better than this! Minimum movement, maximum taste. For 2 years we brew those brooms by grinding into a kettle. Last year there was a poor harvest of mint, so only a couple of weeks 2-year brooms ended in an open box. Not fizzled out, oils did not evaporate.

Hello! The taste and color, as they say, all markers are different One "but": dried mint in Mojito, etc. drinks or dishes where fresh or, at worst, frozen mint is good, will not work. If you prepare it exclusively for tea, then maybe. And so, no one cancels the alternative. Let there be two options.

kliviya, Irina, thanks for the idea, I will definitely do it. Dry a little, well, I'll wind up cigarettes)

But other greens can be frozen in this way, and the juice will not leak out, as happens when cutting. Thank you!

By the way, I didn't think about it, mojito is a summer drink for me, and in winter I only use mint in tea. And now, in general, we drink strawberry mojito, we liked to grind strawberries with mint in a mini blender, such mashed potatoes and freeze for the winter right away.
